Defining a patio door
It is a sliding door, with one sash sliding behind the other as it’s pushed open and will typically lead into a garden, patio or terraced area from the inside of a house.
A standard patio door design will feature two glass panels, but you can upgrade to a three or four-panelled version, and it doesn’t have any sashes that open in or out, avoiding it from taking up space inside or outside.
In hot conditions, it’s opening is great for adding ventilation to living spaces, and lots of light will come in too, which is the case open or closed.
How is it different from the French door?
A French door is hinged, so it opens outwardly or inwardly, and most patio doors contain a lower volume of frame and higher proportion of glazing.
Aluminium-constructed patio doors highlight this best as they have incredibly slim sightlines and a wealth of glass, maximising any garden view.
The very presence of a patio door will inject a very open-plan feel at your house.
Styling ideas
You can omit dressing patio doors because they boast plenty of style, but you may want to do it in order to enjoy privacy at times and protect yourself against any glare. Our recommendation is to do it with either blinds or curtains.
Roller blinds are handy as you can easily roll them up and down or pull the curtain on them at night with a large curtain covering, which will add some nice layering to the door.
It’s best to have any door treatment customised for the design so that it fits neatly and doesn’t hamper the opening in any way.
